Foundation course: Week 1
Foundation Course: Week 1 (Number Sense)
- Fast Addition using complements in Vedic Mathematics is one of the most powerful mental math techniques.
- It is primarily based on the sutra: 👉 Nikhilam Navatashcaramam Dashatah
- This method is especially useful when numbers are close to a base like 10, 100, 1000, etc.
🧠 Core Idea (Concept)
Instead of adding numbers directly, we:
- Convert numbers into their complements (deficits or surpluses) from a base.
- Perform a simpler operation.
- Adjust the result.

📌 Step-by-Step Method
🔹 Case 1: Numbers close to a base (like 100)
Example 1:
👉 Add: 96 + 88
Step 1: Choose base
Nearest base = 100
Step 2: Find complements
- 96 → -4 (since 100 - 96 = 4)
- 88 → -12 (since 100 - 88 = 12)
Step 3: Cross addition
-
96 - 12 = 84
OR - 88 - 4 = 84
Step 4: Add complements
- (-4) + (-12) = -16
Step 5: Combine result
- 84 | -16
Since base is 100 (2 digits), write 16 as two digits:
👉 100 + 84 - 16 = 184 (or)
👉 (100 + 100) - 16 = 184
✅ Final Answer: 96 + 88 = 184
